Open Access
Open access means free, immediate and permanent access to academic publications. By publishing your research open access under an open license, you enable readers to access, distribute and reuse the material freely.
There are different ways to publish your research open access.
- Gold open access: You publish in a fully open access journal that does not charge subscription fees for reading access. Gold open access journals usually charge a publication fee, also known as an Article Processing Charge (APC).
- Hybrid open access: You publish in a traditional subscription journal that offers open access publication for individual articles on payment of an Article Processing Charge (APC).
- Green open access: You publish in a closed access journal and then make a version of your publication available in an institutional repository, such MPG.PuRe.
- Diamond open access: You publish in a fully open access journal or platform that does not charge any publication fees (APCs).

Listings of Open Access Agreements
To make Open Access Publishing comfortable for MPG researchers, the Max Planck Digitial Library (MPDL) has negotiated terms and conditions for many journals, where Max Planck authors can publish Open Access at no cost to them. MPDL also supports you in publishing your book in Open Access.
The Radboud University as part of the Dutch University Consortium also has agreements.
Check these tools to see if your journal is covered by an OA agreement:
- For Max Planck Society Agreements, please click here.
- For Radboud/Dutch university agreements, please click here.
Conditions
Please carefully check the conditions to use the agreements. In most agreements, the Max Planck affiliated authors must be corresponding author of the publication and the Max Planck affiliation must be stated in the published paper. For some agreements, eligible authors must also be submitting author or corresponding AND submitting author. Specific criteria vary for each publisher or journal.
Please use your Max Planck email address (if possible) at all stages of the publishing process if possible to support automated identification processes from the publishers.
During the submitting process, the Max Planck membership should be identified. However, the submitting systems vary and there might be problems or errors. If you notice anything strange, or you are not recognised as a Max Planck author, or you get an invoice even though the APCs should be covered by central agreements, please contact use at library@mpi.nl.
Reduction of OA publication fees
Max Planck has agreements for discounted Open Access fees with some journals, mostly in the field of physics, but also:
- Science - all Max Planck corresponding authors may receive institutional savings of up to 30%.
If you want the Open Access charges in a hybrid journal to be paid by the institute, you have to contact your director, or take money form your grant.
