Remote desktop (RDP)

By using a remote desktop connection, you can access the MPI terminal server and connect to one of the Windows remote desktop servers or even on your own desktop PC (only necessary if you have very specific software on your PC).
Important: for the use of the remote desktop services, a Two Factor Authentication (2FA) is required.

With remote desktop you can connect to:

    • A Remote Desktop Windows Terminal Servers  at the MPI
    • MPI Windows computers from another location

The main reason to set up a remote desktop session is to use applications that are not available on the operating system you are working on (e.g., PowerPoint under LINUX) or to run an MPI environment from outside the institute.

Remote Desktop Windows Terminal Servers at the MPI

There are two Remote Desktop Windows Terminal Servers at the MPI:

    • remotedesktop1 (external: remotedesktop1.mpi.nl)
    • remotedesktop2 (external: remotedesktop2.mpi.nl)

By logging on to one of these windows terminal servers you have easy access to your (personal) network locations at the MPI. To run a Windows Terminal session you need an RDP application. This RDP application is available on Windows, Macintosh (the "Windows App", available in the App Store), and LINUX. To create an RDP file on Windows 10/11 Professional/Enterprise edition, follow these steps:

    • Type "remote" in Start menu, select "Remote desktop Connection" app
    • Computer field: enter target device name (e.g., remotedesktop1.mpi.nl)
    • Enter Username: firstname.lastname@mpi.nl
    • Click "Show options" in the bottom left corner
      • Go to the tab "Advanced"
      • There go to "Connect from anywhere", click settings
      • Tick "Use these RD Gateway server settings" -> Server name: RDgateway1.mpi.nl
      • Click "Ok"
      • Go to the tab "General" and click Save As

For Home edition, please contact the TG for a RDP file.
