IT setup
From network access, data storage and backup practices to available software and remote access, we've got you covered.
Personal network space
Your home drives (winhomes (\\uhomes), K: and U: -drive) are your own personal network storage areas. Only you have permission to read or write. Data on this location are backed up every night in-house and mirrored to the computer centre of the MPG in Garching near Munich (MPCDF). Use this location to store your personal data. Do not store project data in your home directories. From: https://maxintra/TG/language-archive/archiving/data/data-types-and-data-locations
Shared department drive LAG (\\data)
Shared spaces on lag (\data) contain department-specific files of a more temporary or organizational nature, such as minutes, shared protocols, and importantly for wetlab users; the Wetlab (dump) folder.
Shared spaces and Wetlab folder
The Wetlab folder serves as the bridge between data generated by equipment computers within the lab and your individual user account. Lab computers utilize a shared wetlab user login, which everyone uses to save data in the Wetlab folder. This folder is primarily designed for temporary storage of output files, such as microscope images, PCR data, and Tecan reader results. You can access these files from your personal account and then move them, if needed, to the Workspaces area. Additionally, the Wetlab folder is used for temporarily housing files that require lab access, as well as fixed folders containing general lab protocols, meeting minutes, order sheets, ordering instructions, and inventory records.
Workspaces
Workspaces are shared data areas for specific groups, departments, or projects. By default, these areas are accessible only to the members of a specific group. However, this can be changed as needed (via request to TG). Data at this location are backed up every night. Use this location to store your project data. You can request a workspace by sending an email to datasupport@mpi.nl. Please note that individual workspace folders are only accessible to individual researchers, but research/student assistants can reach specific project folders via the collaboration link (type in: \data\collaborations\ in the browser of Windows Explorer, and then go to the specific project/folder: ld-...). MPI-Scratch and pcsoft (\\nt00)
MPI-Scratch is meant for file exchange of temporary data (test files, intermediate data etc.), not storage. The data here are readable and writable for everyone within the institute. Such data will be removed periodically with no available backup.
Pcsoft is available for longer term file sharing, such as a folder for an interdepartmental group of colleagues.
Research data archive (Corpora)
Data that are intended for long time storage (such as for instance documents for publications, or data that we are obliged to keep for a certain time) in general should be archived. For archiving, a web-based deposit tool must be used. This guarantees that the data are enriched with the proper meta data and cannot be changed, manipulated or deleted. Data in the archive are stored with two copies in house and mirrored to several outside locations (Garching, Göttingen).
Remote access
Working from home or elsewhere is possible in several ways. The most convenient way to continue your session at your MPI computer is to directly link to it via a remote desktop application on your MPI laptop or computer. This can be requested at TG. As back-up or to access programs that are not available on your workstation, there are two Remote Desktop Windows Terminal Servers at the MPI: remotedesktop1 and remotedesktop2. More information and support is available here: https://maxintra/TG/Computer_infrastructure/external-access/MPI_Remote_Access_Guide.pdf
Printing
There are printers stationed all around the building. The printer closest to the lab is just outside the lab desk area, next to room A318 and is shown in the printer list as \\NT13\cancolor-a318.
Helpdesk
The Technical Group (TG) works with a ticketing system. Please start your technical request with sending an e-mail to helpdesk@mpi.nl. Your request will be assigned to the responsible TG member. https://maxintra/TG
