Participant database
On this page you can find more information on using our (adult) participant database.
Before you can use the database you should receive a proper training by the coordinator of your department. After that training the coordinator will add you to a list (this link has restricted access) of certified users.
Next to the training, you need to register as a Certified User to use the subject database. To do so, please download the Certified User Registration form, read it carefully, sign the form, and take it to the secretary of your department. After consent by the director, the form will be forwarded to the system administrators (Gert-Jan de Bresser and Tobias van Valkenhoef), who will act on it and file the document. You should then be able to use the database within a couple of days.
- The website for experiment participants to register as an participant or to change their personal information is: http://www.mpi.nl/ppreg (Dutch participants) and http://www.mpi.nl/ppregeng (for English speaking participants). Please note that if you are using participants outside the participant database, the participant must register to the database first. Participants may ask you for the reason why they have to give their BSN number. Please inform them that we have the legal obligation to report those payments to the tax office/Belastingdienst at the end of the year.
- The website for experiment participants to register for an experiment is: http://www.mpi.nl/ppexp. (or http://www.mpi.nl/ppexpeng).
- The website for researchers is: http://www.mpi.nl/ppdb. (Please make sure you use a new browser window when you are also active in another database, such as the Room Booking Calendar.) If you are working from outside the Institute, you can only access the link through Remote Desktop!
After running the experiment, ask the participant to sign the declaration form (for compensation). Bring your participant back to the reception, and leave the (signed) declaration form in mailbox of Operations (across the reception). In case you do not have a work contract with MPI (trainee or guest), both you and your MPI supervisor should sign! Payments will be made into the bank account stated on the declaration form.
Please note: if you have a work contract with MPI you are allowed to participate in MPI experiments, but you can not receive any compensation!
If you run an online experiment, the above procedure should be followed with the only exception that the subject does not have to write down the date and sign. Only you (or in case you do not have a work contract with MPI, both you and your MPI supervisor instead) have to sign.
In case of fieldwork, there is the possibility to pay participants in cash. However, Operations need a list with signatures from the participants to be able to refund the cash payments. You can use this form (see here for a filled out example). Please note that in case of fieldwork, you should always contact Operations and Privacy before you are starting!
Online experiments are paid €10 per hour, and in-house experiments €15 per hour. However, for the shorter in-house experiments (under 45 minutes), we pay all experiments €12,50. This means that an in-house experiments of (up to) 45 minutes will be €12,50, as well as an experiment of 15 or 30 minutes. An experiment of 60 minutes will be €15, an experiment of 75 minutes €18,75, an experiment of 90 minutes €22,50 etc.
Please note, that we calculate experiment time and rate in blocks of 15 minutes. So “an experiment of 60 minutes”, means “an experiment between 45-60 minutes”.
Here you can find a step-by-step manual to the participants database.
