Field Trips and Equipment
This page gives you more information about equipment for field trips, expeditions, and experiments outside of the MPI.
Tasks of TG
- Purchasing and maintaining equipment (audio, video, photo, computers, data storage, cables, power supplies, adapters, head phones etc.)
- Check, prepare and provide equipment for experiments and expeditions, inside and outside of the MPI
- Provide advice, information and documentation
Your plans
To request equipment that you wish to use for an experiment or field trip, go to the page Field Trip Equipment Request and fill out the form there. Please fill in this request form as soon as possible (preferably up to six weeks in advance). Obviously dates given in an early stage can change easily, but we still can benefit from it: we will have the opportunity to anticipate on the total number of requests and start preparations in time. If you have special wishes regarding equipment, please describe them in the comment field.
Available equipment
- video cameras
- photo cameras
- audio recorders
- microphones
- headphones
- laptops
- tablets
- (solar) power supplies
- various accessoiries
Feedback to you
After you've made your request, it is recommended to have a talk with Jeroen Geerts (room 103, all field trip matters), to get info and advice on what model of camera/recorder best suits your wishes, power management in the field etc.
General questions about the workflow can also be directed to Alex Dukers (room 115).
Report (feedback to TG)
If you encountered problems using the equipment or if something broke down or malfunctioned during your expedition, let us know. After your arrival back at the Institute please return all field trip equipment to room 115 as soon as possible.
Usage
If you want to know more about the usage of audio and video equipment turn to the section Practical recording tips.
Precautions when travelling outside Europe
The sheet Precautions when travelling outside Europe is intended to provide information for business travel to countries outside Europe when carrying one or more data storage media.
Stephen Levinson, head of operations and Mrs. Gieszinger (MPG, Münich) formulated a number of regulations, guidelines and recommendations with respect to dangers in the conduct of fieldwork.
The document Essential Notes for Fieldworkers provides a couple of documents to fill in before departure:
- a checklist
- a contact list
- a risk assessment form
- information on the (latent) Crisis Management Team
