MPI-specific rules and guidelines
There are several ways to access your data and email from outside of the institute. Below are the guidelines on how to establish a safe, remote connection to your workspace at MPI.
The options are:
- Remote Desktop Connection to remotedesktop servers or to your desktop PC
- VPN connection to MPI (vpn.mpi.nl)
- SSH connection to MPI (ssh.mpi.nl; for Linux/compute cluster usage)
- SSLVPN connection to MPI via a web browser
As a general rule, transfer of sensitive or personal data to your home office computer is not permitted. If for any reason you have to transfer personal or sensitive data, discuss this with your director or research group leader and the data protection coordinator. Only upon written permission (your director/research group leader will have to store a copy of your form), you should follow the steps described below, after filling in the remote working data form (email privacy@mpi.nl for a copy).
- Use Cryptshare to transfer one file to your home office computer (the current maximum storage limit has been extended, you can upload up to 100 GB)
- Work on this file
- After you finish working with this file, upload it and delete the file from your local computer (also empty the downloads folder and trash bin)
- Transfer the next file via Cryptshare to your home office computer
If you are using remote desktop connection, you could also just copy/paste the data form the MPI device to your personal machine.
Notices: in most cases, the reason to transfer sensitive data will be the frame-precise processing of annotation of video material. Video recordings of participants are generally sensitive, personal data.
Important: make sure that the computer on which the data is processed meets the minimum security requirements, such as all current patches of the operating system being installed, and an up-to-date virus-scanner is installed.
Please contact helpdesk@mpi.nl if you are not sure if your computer meets the requirements.
