Ethical code of conduct
The environment of the labs should be a culture of safety, confidence, inclusion and transparency. It is crucial for users to have a clear understanding of their tasks, best practices, and how to handle difficulties that may arise.
Safe working environment
Transparent and respectful communication is key to maintaining a safe and productive environment. In order to ensure safety and clarity, it is important for individuals to be honest when they are unsure about something. They should feel safe and confident to seek assistance or clarification from someone with appropriate experience, such as a supervisor or the lab manager. Constructive criticism plays an important role in identifying areas where protocols are not being followed to the required standards. It is essential to provide individuals with opportunities to improve, while also enforcing consequences for not adhering to standards. By promoting open communication, continuous learning, and accountability, the lab environment will become a space where individuals can work confidently and safely.
We are people first, scientists second
We anticipate that lab members will exhibit enthusiasm, motivation, responsibility, and a commitment to well-defined goals. However, it is crucial to recognize that we are individuals first and scientists second. Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is an important foundation for a smooth-running and effective research environment. As scientists, we experience the inherent ups and downs of our profession, including moments of frustration and success, as well as days when experiments yield better results than others. It is important for lab members to approach their work with a positive mindset and feel confident in their ability to manage their tasks effectively. Identifying stress or health issues early on and taking preventive measures before they escalate into major problems is highly encouraged. By prioritizing the well-being of lab members, we can create an environment that supports their personal and professional growth.

Institutional rules and code of conduct
For the Max Planck Society responsible and compliant behaviour is a key basic requirement. It is essential for all employees – both in science and in the science support area – to observe the laws and internal regulations. Responsible behaviour must be based on the structures of our organization, a balanced system which links governance oriented towards academic freedom with an administration structure focused on compliance with the rules. It is up to each and every one of us to comply with the rules and act in line with our values – in short, to do the right thing. No matter whether you work at a laboratory or in administration, whether you look after animals or are in charge of technology, no matter where in the hierarchy I/you/we are located: any actions matter. We all contribute to excellent science through our responsible behaviour and thereby help build the global reputation of the Max Planck Society. In order to make sure that this remains the case, the information here should serve as a guide. Let yourself be guided by them, because our actions today will determine our opportunities tomorrow. - Martin Stratmann, MPG President, & Simone Schwanitz, Secretary General, 2012 in Leitplancken; Guidelines for responsible conduct.
