Wireless Network (WiFi)

The wireless network (WLAN, WiFi) is available throughout the institute. You can choose between three main networks (SSID).

    Main networks

    • Eduroam: for all people that have an eduroam account somewhere else or the institute
    • Mpiroam: on request for MPI members on MPI devices
    • MPI-Guest: for short-term visitors, business partners, service engineers, etc.

    Eduroam

Eduroam is a wireless network service available in many educational institutes around the world. It just needs a single valid account at one of the participating organisations. People with an eduroam account form another organisation can use it right away.

To get access with your MPI credentials you need:

    • Username: username@mpi.nl (not the full email address, just the account name preceding @mpi.nl)
    • Password: your password

As long as your MPI account is valid, you can use eduroam networks at all other participating institutions throughout the world. If necessary, choose authentication method PEAP/MSCHAPv2. More information on eduroam can be found here

    How to connect to eduroam

The following steps need to be taken to configure the eduroam connection:

    • Navigate to your "Settings", go to the “Wireless & networks” and tap “Wifi”.

    • Select the network "eduroam" from the list of available networks. You will be prompted to sign in to the wireless network.

    • Note - you may need to scroll down or check a box "Advanced settings" to see the following options (this is sometimes not obvious):

    EAP Method: PEAP
    Phase-2 authentication: MSCHAPV2
CA certificate: rootrt / system certificate / Systeemcertificaat
Identity: your username (formatted as username@mpi.nl)
    Domain: mpi.nl
Anonymous identity: leave this field blank!!!
    Password: your password
Show password: you can check this if you wish to see the password is entered correctly

    • Tap “Connect” when complete.

Now you are connected with eduroam.

Connect to eduroam with an iOS device (iPhone/iPad).

The following steps need to be taken to configure the eduroam connection:

    • Go to your "Settings" app.
    • Under "Wi-Fi" select the network called "eduroam".
    • Enter your username and password and tap “Join”.

The username needs to be formatted as "username@mpi.nl".

    • When you receive a security certificate, tap  the text that says "Trust" at the top of the screen.  Installation of this certificate is required for eduroam to function.

Now you are connected with eduroam.

Connect to eduroam with a macOS device.

The following steps need to be taken to configure the eduroam connection:

    • Click on the wireless icon in the upper right corner of your desktop.
    • Select the eduroam network. Enter your username and password.

The username needs to be formatted as username@mpi.nl. Click “Join”.

    • Click "Continue" when asked to accept the security certificate.

A computer administrator name and password will be required to install the certificate:  this is a username and password of the computer, not the one that is needed for eduroam.

Now you are connected with eduroam.

If you experience any connectivity issues with a recent version of macOS, you could try to remove old certificates by going to System Settings > Privacy & Security > scroll all the way down to Profiles (or simply enter "Profiles" into the search bar in System Settings). Remove any eduroam-related entries with the [-] button and the Mac will ask you to authenticate in order to do so. Then try to connect again.

Connect to eduroam with a Windows 10/11 device.

The following steps need to be taken to configure the eduroam connection:

    • Click on the wireless icon in the bottom right corner of your desktop. Click on the “eduroam” SSID.

    • Connect to the “eduroam” Network, click “Connect”.
    • Enter your MPI‐account name (with @mpi.nl behind it) and password. Click “OK”.
    • Click "Connect" on the dialogue box that asks if you want to continue connecting.

Now you are connected with eduroam.

    Mpiroam

If you are connected through this WiFi access point, your device can be integrated in the MPI domain. Your device needs to be whitelisted at TG. Users without an MPI account cannot use mpiroam.

    MPI Guest

If you cannot connect through eduroam, you can use the WiFi connection MPI Guest. At the reception, you can receive a WiFi voucher. The connection will be valid for a settled time.

    Extra WLAN bandwidth

For events with a big audience (e.g., conferences, workshops, etc.) you can apply for additional wireless networks to offer more bandwidth (capacity). You can share the temporary login code openly, by writing it on a whiteboard for instance.
